Website for law firms: what a law firm website needs in 2026
What clients expect from a law firm website, which elements are mandatory, how local SEO works for lawyers, which mistakes most firms make and what a law firm website costs.

A website for lawyers has one job: it has to build trust in the first ten seconds and then make the call or the inquiry as easy as possible. Clients rarely search relaxed. They have a termination on the desk, an accident behind them or a contract due to be signed tomorrow. Whoever lands in that situation on a page with a paragraph-sign photo and a desert of body text clicks on.
We build websites for law firms and other advisory professions, and this article sums up what in our view belongs on a law firm website: mandatory elements, professional-conduct requirements as a factual note, local SEO, the most common mistakes and the costs. Not legal advice, but a checklist from practice.
Key takeaways
- Clients expect three answers within seconds: does the firm handle my area of law, who exactly advises me and how do I reach that person now.
- Mandatory elements: one page per area of law, real lawyer profiles with photos, several contact routes, reviews, legal notice and privacy policy with the professional-conduct disclosures.
- Local SEO is the most important channel for law firms: Google Business Profile, area of law plus city as keyword, reviews.
- The most common mistakes: stock photos, paragraph-sign and scales imagery, unstructured body text, no visible contact on mobile.
- Costs: market range 6,000–15,000 €, at INSYNC from 8,000 € including design, development, practice-area structure and local SEO basics.
What do clients expect from a law firm website?
Clients expect clarity, faces and a fast route to contact. Whoever searches "employment lawyer Regensburg" wants to see at a glance on the website that exactly this area of law is handled, which lawyer is responsible and how to reach them. Everything else comes after.
Then there is trust. A Stanford study from the Web Credibility Project shows that roughly 75% of users judge a company's credibility by its web design. For law firms that counts double, because the service itself is intangible. The client buys an assessment and the person giving it. That is why lawyer websites that show people work, and websites that merely claim competence fail.
And: clients read differently from lawyers. They do not search for "section 622 of the Civil Code" but for "received termination, what now". A law firm website that writes in the client's language while staying serious wins against the one that stays in legalese.
Which elements belong on a lawyer website?
Seven elements are mandatory in our view: practice-area pages, lawyer profiles, contact routes, reviews, legal notice and privacy policy, a mobile presentation that puts the call first and accessibility in line with the BFSG standard. The rest is optional.
One page per area of law
Every area of law gets its own page with its own heading, typical cases, how the mandate proceeds and the responsible lawyer. That is good for clients, who immediately see whether they are in the right place, and good for Google, which needs one matching page per search query. A collective "our services" page with twelve bullet points ranks for nothing.
Lawyer profiles with real photos
Every lawyer gets a profile with a professional photo, areas of law, career, languages and a direct contact option. The photos are the single most important trust factor on the entire website. A shoot with a good photographer costs 500–1,500 € and is the best investment in the project.
Contact routes that fit the situation
Phone number in the header, tappable on mobile. Contact form with a choice of practice area. Optionally online appointment booking and an emergency number for criminal law. Whoever is inside a termination deadline calls. Whoever wants a contract checked writes. Both must be reachable on every page without scrolling.
Reviews and references
Google reviews embedded, current and answered. Clients read them before they call. For references and success stories: stay factual. Statements that hold out the prospect of success are sensitive under professional-conduct rules. What exactly is permitted, you clarify with your bar association.
Legal notice, privacy and accessibility
Beyond the usual legal notice, lawyers need additional disclosures under professional-conduct rules: the responsible bar association, the professional title and the state in which it was awarded, the applicable professional regulations (BRAO, BORA, RVG) with reference, and the professional liability insurance with its geographic scope. The privacy policy should address attorney-client confidentiality, the contact form should transmit encrypted and the server should be in the EU. That is the state as we know it from projects, not legal advice: check the details with your bar association.
Accessibility has been a topic since the German Accessibility Act (BFSG) and is cleanly achievable on law firm websites: sufficient contrast, keyboard operation, alt texts, clear forms. Whether your firm falls under the act depends on size and offering. We build it in by default because it makes the site better for everyone. Details are in Accessible website under BFSG.
What about professional-conduct rules?
Lawyer advertising is permitted as long as it informs factually about professional activity. That is how section 43b of the Federal Lawyers' Act (BRAO) sums up the framework, and the professional code specifies it. For the website that means in practice: areas of law, career, specialist lawyer titles and contact details are unproblematic. It gets sensitive with sensational promises of success, with labels like "specialist" without the corresponding qualification and with soliciting a specific mandate in an individual case.
We are web designers, not lawyers. So we stick to a simple rule: everything we propose as text goes through the firm before going live, and when in doubt you ask your bar association. Most bar associations have fact sheets on law firm websites that explain the framework in two pages.
How does local SEO work for law firms?
Local SEO is the channel with the highest return for law firms, because almost every client search has a location angle. "Family lawyer Weiden", "traffic law firm near me", "lawyer Nuremberg tenancy law". Google first shows the local pack with three firms and stars, then the normal results. Whoever is in those three gets the calls.
Three levers decide: first, a complete Google Business Profile with the right primary category ("lawyer" or the specific area of law), opening hours, real photos and current reviews. Second, pages carrying area of law plus city as keyword, with address and map. Third, consistent firm data in directories like anwalt.de, Das Örtliche and the bar association's lawyer directory. The basics are in our article on Local SEO; for law firms one point matters especially: gather reviews actively but without pressure, and answer every one, including the negative. A factual handling of criticism is the best advertising a lawyer has.
Which mistakes do most law firm websites make?
The most common mistakes are images everyone has and texts nobody reads. Concretely:
Stock photos of handshakes and glass facades. They signal "we had no time for real photos" and clients immediately recognize them as placeholders. Paragraph signs, scales and gavels as decoration. That is the visual equivalent of "Dear Sir or Madam". Deserts of body text where the firm's history since 1987 runs over three screens before the first area of law is mentioned. No contact on mobile: the phone number sits in the footer, not tappable, while 60% of clients search on mobile. And no page per area of law, only a list.
Add one technical mistake you cannot see: websites from builders or old WordPress installations that load in four seconds and sit at the back of Google. A law firm website does not have to be spectacular. It has to be fast, clear and serious. What that means in design we described in Why minimalism creates trust.
What does a website for lawyers cost?
A professional law firm website costs 6,000–15,000 € on the market, at INSYNC from 8,000 €. Included: concept and structure by practice area, individual design without law firm clichés, lawyer profiles, contact routes, local SEO basics with Google Business Profile, accessibility to BFSG standard and a CMS with which the firm maintains texts and profiles itself. The website is live in four to eight weeks.
Not included are the photographer, texts for each practice area if the firm does not supply them itself, and the professional-conduct review. Budget 500–1,500 € for photos and 1,500–4,000 € for texts depending on scope. Builder offers at 30 € a month exist and are enough for the solo practice with one area of law that does not need new mandates via Google. For everyone else the website is the cheapest client channel there is, when it works. Our offer for law firms is at Web design for lawyers.
Concept and practice-area structure
We clarify which areas of law should bring mandates, which lawyers carry them and which search terms clients in your region use. From that the page structure emerges.
Moodboard and photo concept
We define the visual language: serious but not stiff, without paragraph signs and scales. The photo shoot is planned now so the pictures are ready when the design stands.
Homepage hero design
The first screen decides. We design it first and align it with the firm before the remaining pages follow.
Website design and content
Practice-area pages, profiles, contact, legal notice and privacy policy are designed and filled with your texts. Professional-conduct disclosures are checked with the bar association in this phase.
Development, CMS and local SEO
Build in Next.js or Astro with Sanity as CMS, accessibility, tracking, Google Business Profile and directory entries.
Go-live and support
Go-live with redirects from the old site, CMS onboarding and on request ongoing SEO support for more clients from the region.
Frequently asked questions
Mandatory are a legal notice with the professional-conduct disclosures (bar association, professional title, liability insurance, BRAO/BORA/RVG), a privacy policy and reachable contact details. For clients, one page per area of law, lawyer profiles with real photos, a tappable phone number and reviews matter. Details on professional-conduct rules you clarify with your bar association.
A professional law firm website costs 6,000–15,000 € on the market, at INSYNC from 8,000 € including design, development, practice-area structure, CMS and local SEO basics. Photographer (500–1,500 €) and texts (1,500–4,000 €) come on top if the firm does not supply them. Builder solutions from 30 € monthly are only enough for solo practices without Google ambitions.
Yes, factually. Section 43b BRAO permits advertising that informs factually in form and content about professional activity. Areas of law, specialist titles, career and contact are unproblematic. Promises of success, unsubstantiated "specialist" labels and soliciting a specific mandate are sensitive. When in doubt, your bar association's fact sheet helps.
Through local SEO: a complete Google Business Profile with a fitting category, reviews and photos, plus pages with area of law plus city as keyword and consistent firm data in directories like anwalt.de. The local pack with three firms above the normal results gets most of the calls.
The German Accessibility Act has applied since June 2025 to certain services for consumers, with exemptions for micro-enterprises. Whether your firm falls under it depends on size and offering. Regardless, accessibility on a law firm website is easy to achieve and improves use for all clients.
Real photos of the lawyers and the offices, by a photographer, in a consistent style. No stock photos, no paragraph signs, no scales. The lawyer photos are the most important trust factor on the website, because the client hires a person, not a firm.
With us four to eight weeks from concept to go-live. The biggest time factor is the firm itself: texts per area of law, photo shoot and professional-conduct review. Whoever handles that in parallel with the design is live in six weeks.
