Finding the best GEO agency: 7 criteria that separate real AI visibility from labels
For half a year almost every agency has been calling itself a GEO agency. Seven criteria to tell real AI visibility work from relabelled SEO, plus a provider overview.

Finding the best GEO agency is hard precisely because the market is not two years old. Generative Engine Optimization describes the work of getting your company to appear in the answers of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI overviews. Eighteen months ago almost nobody had an offering for it. Today a great many agency websites carry a GEO page, and part of that is the same SEO service as before, just with a new label.
This article gives you the yardstick to tell those apart. First the terms, because GEO, AI SEO, AEO and LLMO get mixed up and do not quite mean the same thing. Then seven criteria that reveal real GEO work, from measuring prompt visibility to entities and mentions outside your own site through to technical execution. After that a decision guide and an overview of four German providers whose GEO pages we read ourselves, plus us. And a warning up front: nobody has solid long-term data in this field yet, including us.
Key takeaways
- There is no single best GEO agency, and in a market less than two years old there cannot be one. There are providers who measure and providers who claim.
- GEO, AI SEO, AEO and LLMO describe largely the same work with different emphasis. What matters is not the term but whether someone can measure mentions in AI answers.
- The clearest separator: does the agency measure prompt visibility with a fixed set of questions and tools such as Ahrefs Brand Radar or Peec, or does it just show screenshots?
- Real GEO work happens largely outside your website: entities, directories, review platforms, trade articles and third-party listicles are the sources models cite from.
- Our prices: GEO audit from 1,500 €, GEO offerings between 1,500 and 10,000 € depending on scope. Anyone guaranteeing you mentions in ChatGPT is selling something nobody controls.
Is there even one single best GEO agency?
No, and the question "who is the best GEO agency" is even harder to answer here than with SEO. The queries behind it read best GEO agency, best AI SEO agency, best agency for GEO or GEO optimization agency, and they always mean the same thing: who can I trust with this without being able to check it myself? With SEO there have at least been twenty years of experience and cases you can trace. With GEO, everyone involved has been working for eighteen months towards a target that shifts every few months, because models, answer formats and citation rules keep changing.
That does not mean GEO is hocus pocus. It means nobody can seriously claim their method is the best, because the basis for comparison is missing. Whoever writes a "best GEO agencies" ranking and puts themselves in first place does so because the format works for their own visibility. We do it differently here: criteria first, providers alphabetically, no numbering.
What can be judged is the way of working. Whoever measures your mentions in AI answers today, measures again in three months and can explain the change works methodically. One that tells you it "optimizes for ChatGPT" while carrying out the same on-page measures as three years ago works on a label. The difference becomes visible within ten minutes of a first conversation.
GEO, AI SEO, AEO, LLMO: is everyone talking about the same thing?
Largely yes, with different emphasis. The four terms emerged in parallel, none has established itself as the standard. That is why the same provider is an AI SEO agency on one subpage and a GEO agency on the next.
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the most widespread term and means the work of appearing as a source or a recommendation in the answers of generative systems: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude and the AI overviews in Google search. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is older and broader. It also covers featured snippets, voice assistants and classic direct answers in search. LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization) emphasizes the model side: how your brand is represented in training and retrieval material. And AI SEO is the pragmatic German umbrella term many providers use because customers understand it. If you search for an AI SEO agency and someone answers with a GEO page, that is no contradiction.
A different distinction is what matters in practice: the one between work on your own site and work outside it. Whether someone calls themselves a GEO optimization agency, an AI SEO agency or an LLMO consultant is marketing. Whether they can show you which prompts you are mentioned in today and which you are not is method. What sits behind the term is explained in detail in Generative Engine Optimization and in Answer Engine Optimization.
How do you recognize a real GEO agency?
These seven criteria separate providers that actually work on AI visibility from providers that relabelled their existing SEO service. They are deliberately phrased so you can ask them in a first conversation without having expert knowledge yourself.
1. It measures prompt visibility instead of showing screenshots
This is the sharpest separator in the whole market. Ask: how do you measure whether my company appears in AI answers? The usable answer describes a fixed set of questions real customers would actually ask, run regularly across several models and evaluated: how often is the brand mentioned, in which position, in which context, who is mentioned instead and which sources does the model cite.
There are tools for this, such as Ahrefs Brand Radar and Peec AI, plus custom scripts with fixed prompt sets. Which tool is used is secondary. What matters is that there is a documented set that stays the same over time, otherwise you are comparing snapshots.
The useless counterpart: a screenshot of a ChatGPT answer containing the client name. Models do not answer deterministically, the same question can produce a different result ten minutes later. A single screenshot proves nothing. How a clean measurement is built is described in measuring AI visibility.
2. It works on entities and mentions outside your own site
The biggest difference between SEO and GEO is where the work happens. With SEO your website is the stage. With GEO it is one source among many, and often not the most important. Models assemble their picture of your company from many places: your site, directories, review platforms, trade media, Wikipedia and Wikidata, LinkedIn, forums and third-party comparison articles.
From that follows the work on your entity: company name, location, services, contacts and figures have to be identical everywhere. Contradictory information is the most common reason a model describes a company vaguely or wrongly. Whoever takes GEO seriously clears up these contradictions first, before talking about new content.
Ask specifically: which sources outside our website do you touch, and in which order? If the answer consists exclusively of measures on your own site, it is SEO with a new name. How models select sources is written up in LLM SEO and in AI search engines.
3. It knows that listicles and directories are the citation source
When someone asks a model which providers are worth considering for a service, the model rarely draws on the website of a single provider. It draws on pages comparing several providers: editorial lists, industry directories, review platforms and comparison articles. So the question of which third-party lists your company appears in is often more important than any single change on your homepage.
An agency that has understood this works on it systematically: it researches which pages actually get cited in the relevant answers, checks whether your company is listed there and works on inclusion and currency. Add to that profiles on review platforms with real reviews, because models reward consistency between self-description and outside description.
That is incidentally also why you are reading this article: a criteria-led piece like this is itself a format models like to cite. Whoever sells you GEO should be able to explain why their own content is built the way it is. What counts in terms of substance is in showing up in ChatGPT answers.
4. It can deliver technically: llms.txt, structured data, crawlability
GEO has a tangible technical side, and it is the fastest way to check an agency: look at its own website. Is there an llms.txt under the domain, a machine-readable briefing for AI systems? Do you find structured data in JSON-LD format in the source code, cleanly marking up organization, services and authors? Whoever sells GEO and does neither on their own site is selling something they do not apply themselves.
Then there is crawlability for AI bots. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended are separate accesses that can be blocked accidentally in robots.txt, in the firewall or in your host's bot protection. We see it regularly: a company wonders why it does not appear in AI answers and has been blocking the crawlers since the last security update. A good GEO agency checks this in the first week and reads server logs instead of guessing. The same goes for rendering: content that only comes into existence through JavaScript in the browser is invisible to part of the AI crawlers.
5. It knows the difference between Google AI overviews and ChatGPT
This is the technical question that reveals the most in a first conversation. The AI overviews in Google search are fed from the Google index. What appears there depends heavily on which pages rank for a query, so on classic SEO. Whoever wants to appear in AI overviews needs pages that do well in organic search and answer a question in a clearly delimited paragraph.
ChatGPT works differently. It combines knowledge from training with a web search triggered depending on the question. Brand awareness, mentions in trade media and consistency across many sources weigh more heavily here than your Google position. Perplexity sits in between and cites most visibly, which makes it the best entry point for measurement.
An agency that can explain this difference clearly will also tell you where your effort belongs. If your customers mostly use Google, the priority differs from when they start their research in an assistant. The differences in detail are in SEO and GEO compared.
6. Specialist instead of full service
GEO is too young to do on the side. The methods change in months, not years, and whoever does not run their own measurements regularly works with knowledge from the day before yesterday. An agency with two disciplines can carry that effort. An agency offering ads, social, print, trade fair construction and GEO on the side usually has no capacity for it and adopts whatever trade articles say.
With us that is the reason for the setup: web design and web development on one side, SEO and GEO on the other. This combination is especially obvious in the GEO context, because a noticeable part of the work is technical. Structured data, llms.txt, rendering and clean templates emerge where the website is built, not in a consulting PDF.
And again, honestly, the other side: if your goal is brand awareness across several channels, if you need ads, social and PR at the same time, then a full service agency serves you better. Brand awareness genuinely pays into AI visibility, and whoever wants to play those channels in a coordinated way needs a partner who serves them all. We do no performance marketing, no social media management and no print, only our two lanes.
7. It says openly what nobody knows yet
The seventh criterion is a question of attitude. The field is eighteen months old. There is no solid long-term data on how strongly GEO pays into revenue, how long effects last and which measure achieves how much in which model. Anyone claiming otherwise has a short data series and a lot of confidence.
A good agency tells you that and derives a way of working from it: small steps, measure often, mark assumptions as assumptions, drop measures that move nothing. And it tells you that GEO does not replace classic SEO, because a large part of AI answers draws on content in the Google index.
The hardest warning signal in the other direction is a guarantee. Whoever assures you that you will be named in ChatGPT promises something they do not control, because not even the operator of the model can promise a mention. Be equally careful with offerings that consist of a single file: an llms.txt alone does not make you visible, it is one building block among many.
How to find the right GEO agency for you
Once the seven criteria are met, the fit decides. Three questions help you pick the right one from the remaining providers.
By goal
If you first want to know where you stand at all, a GEO audit is enough: an inventory of mentions, an entity check across all sources, a technical review and a prioritized list. If you want to build AI visibility permanently, you need ongoing support, because mentions, directories and content have to be maintained. And if your main problem is that you do not rank on Google, the order is clear: first the organic base through SEO support, then GEO on top. Without a base, AI overviews lack the foundation.
By budget
GEO is billed very differently in the market, sometimes as its own product, sometimes as part of an SEO retainer. Few providers name prices publicly, which is understandable in such a young field, because the effort depends heavily on the starting point. So we state our numbers: a GEO audit starts at 1,500 € with us, GEO offerings sit between 1,500 and 10,000 € depending on scope. If GEO runs as part of ongoing support, our SEO packages apply from 1,290 € per month.
Important: an audit is not a result but a map. The effort comes afterwards, with the entity, the content and mentions outside your own site. Whoever sells a fixed-price GEO package without an analysis does not know your starting point.
By industry
GEO does not work equally strongly everywhere. It brings the most where people research before an inquiry and compare several providers: complex B2B services, software, consulting-intensive services, technical products. These are exactly the questions AI assistants like to answer in list form, and that is exactly where it is decided who makes the shortlist.
GEO has less leverage with spontaneous local queries and with products bought without research. There, classic search, map services and reviews remain the stronger channel. An agency that tells you this instead of selling every business model the same package has already passed the first test.
Provider overview: GEO agencies in Germany 2026
The market is young and more thinly populated than the number of GEO pages suggests. So we only name providers whose GEO page we opened and read ourselves on 9 September 2026, and we only report what it says there. The order is alphabetical, it is not a ranking, and completeness is not the goal. We do not judge results, prices or quality of competitors.
Claneo
Claneo is based in Berlin and runs a dedicated page for LLMO and GEO strategies. It describes an AI quick check, GEO analyses and strategies, AI visibility analyses with monitoring, strategic consulting, GEO workshops, a content readiness analysis, technical consulting including log file analysis for AI bots, as well as E-E-A-T audits, digital PR and an analysis of brand presence. On that page the agency describes itself as a GEO agency with more than 75 experts.
Strong for larger, internationally positioned companies setting up GEO as part of a broad search and content strategy and wanting consulting, content and digital PR from one source. Less fitting for small projects with a single target market.
geoagentur.de
geoagentur.de is based in Herford and is the only one among the providers named here that does GEO exclusively. Its own site describes the company as the first agency to focus entirely on Generative Engine Optimization. The services are sorted by platform, among them ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, plus AI visibility, semantic optimization, technical SEO for AI and GEO strategy. There is also a dedicated GEO course and a press section with media appearances.
Strong if you want to buy exactly this one discipline and classic search engine optimization sits in house or with another partner. Less fitting if you deliberately want to steer SEO and GEO from one source.
Gerlach Media
Gerlach Media is an owner-managed company based in Büchen and runs a GEO page focused on industry and B2B. It names GEO consulting and potential analysis, knowledge architecture and structure, GEO optimization for content and pages, competitor and entity analysis as well as ongoing GEO support. The page explicitly names the systems it optimizes for individually: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI overviews and AI mode, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude. There is also a proprietary AI visibility tool.
Strong for mid-sized industrial companies with complex offerings where entity work and positioning within the competitive field are the focus. Less fitting for companies that need a large international structure.
INSYNC
We work in two disciplines: web design and web development with Next.js, Astro and Sanity, plus SEO and GEO. The location is the Upper Palatinate, the team works internationally. We measure AI visibility with fixed prompt sets across several models, for clients and for ourselves, and treat entity work, mentions outside your own site and the technical base as three separate work areas. A GEO audit starts from 1,500 €, GEO offerings sit between 1,500 and 10,000 €, the service in detail is on the GEO agency page.
Strong when technical execution and visibility belong together, meaning when structured data, rendering, llms.txt and page structure have to be touched anyway. We can implement those measures ourselves instead of only recommending them.
Less fitting if you need performance marketing, social media management, print or trade fair construction. And frankly: we too work in this field with eighteen months of experience and without long-term data. What we can promise is the measurement, not the result in a single model.
taismo
taismo is based in Kirchheim near Munich, was founded in 2019 according to its own statements and addresses B2B and the mid-market. The GEO page describes a setup of four building blocks: machine-readable structure, entity and evidence, citable content as well as measurement and adjustment. There are also dedicated pages for GEO audit and AI SEO, an SEO wiki with technical definitions and an llms.txt under its own domain.
Strong for mid-sized companies that want GEO not as a standalone product but firmly interlocked with ongoing SEO support. Less fitting if you want to buy GEO exclusively without accompanying search engine optimization.
GEO agencies compared: focus, location and budget orientation

| Gerlach Media | GEO for industry and B2B, entity and competitor analysis, proprietary measurement tool | Büchen | on request |
| INSYNC | GEO plus in-house technical execution, fixed prompt sets across several models | Upper Palatinate, international team | Audit from 1,500 €, offerings 1,500 to 10,000 € |
| taismo | GEO firmly interlocked with SEO support, structure, entity, citable content | Kirchheim near Munich | on request |
Get the starting point measured
Before anyone optimizes: a prompt set of 20 to 50 real customer questions, run across several models. That is your baseline.
Check technology and crawlability
Are GPTBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended allowed through? Are structured data and an llms.txt in place? Is the content readable without JavaScript?
Clean up the entity
Collect all mentions, remove contradictions in name, location, services and figures. It is unspectacular and often works fastest.
Build citable content
Answer questions the way they are asked: core answer in the first sentence, clear structure, verifiable numbers, one topic per page.
Build mentions outside
Directories, review platforms, trade media and third-party comparison articles. Exactly the sources the models cite from.
Re-measure and discard
Run the same prompt set again after eight to twelve weeks, explain the change, drop measures that had no effect.
Frequently asked questions
There is none, and in a market less than two years old there cannot be, because solid comparison data is missing. The more useful question is which agency can demonstrate that it measures mentions in AI answers, works on your entity and on mentions outside your own site and can implement the technical base itself. Whoever puts themselves in first place in their own list provides no evidence for that.
A GEO agency works on getting your company to appear as a source or recommendation in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI overviews. That involves four blocks: measuring mentions through fixed prompt sets, cleaning up your entity across all sources, citable content, and the technical base of structured data, llms.txt and crawlability for AI bots.
In practice usually none. GEO, AI SEO, AEO and LLMO are terms that emerged in parallel for largely the same work, with different emphasis: GEO on generative answers, AEO more broadly on answer formats overall, LLMO on representation inside the model, AI SEO as the German umbrella term. So do not ask about the term, ask about the measurement.
Few providers name public prices, because the effort depends heavily on the starting point. With us a GEO audit starts from 1,500 €, GEO offerings sit between 1,500 and 10,000 € depending on scope. If GEO runs as part of ongoing support, our SEO packages apply from 1,290 € per month. A fixed-price package without a prior analysis is a warning signal.
Usually not. GEO and SEO build on the same content, structures and data, so an agency steering both together is generally more efficient. A pure GEO agency mainly pays off when classic search engine optimization runs well in house or with another partner and you only want to add this one building block.
No. Nobody controls what a language model answers, not even the operator promises individual mentions. Models do not answer deterministically, the same question can name different providers at different times. What an agency can promise is a clean measurement, a documented way of working and a traceable report on changes.
No. An llms.txt is a machine-readable briefing for AI systems and a sensible building block, but on its own it achieves little. Without a consistent entity, citable content, mentions outside your own site and a website reachable for AI bots, the file remains a note nobody can place. Offerings consisting essentially of this file are too thin.
Technical fixes and clearing up contradictory information sometimes show effect after a few weeks, because models with web search access updated sources quickly. Building mentions outside your own site and brand authority takes months. There are no reliable statements about durability yet, the field is too young for that. Plan for a first re-measurement after eight to twelve weeks.
