SEO in Germany costs between 500 and 5,000 euros a month, depending on who does the work and how tough your market is. That is the honest short answer. Anything below that is either a tool subscription or an offer that leaves you wondering afterwards what you actually paid for.

This article shows you the three billing models, the real market ranges for freelancers, agencies, and in-house SEO, the factors that push the price up or down, and our own packages with prices. Plus a section most cost articles do not have yet: what visibility in ChatGPT and co. costs on top.

Key takeaways

  • SEO is billed in three ways: hourly rate (80 to 200 euros), project price (1,000 to 10,000 euros), or a monthly retainer (500 to 5,000 euros and up).
  • According to Ahrefs, most small and mid-sized companies pay 800 to 2,500 euros a month. Offers below 300 euros are almost always tool output without strategy.
  • Price drivers are competition, website size, technical condition, content volume, and backlinks. Not the size of the agency.
  • Our retainers: Care 1,290 euros, Growth 1,790 euros plus 3,900 euros setup, Growth Max 3,390 euros plus 4,900 euros setup. Audit with roadmap from 1,500 euros.
  • SEO needs 3 to 6 months before the first movement. Whoever wants results after four weeks is better off with Google Ads.

Which SEO pricing models exist?

In Germany, SEO is billed in three ways: by the hour, as a project flat fee, or as a monthly retainer. Which model fits depends less on the price than on whether you are buying a one-off task or an ongoing channel.

Hourly rate. Typical for consultants and small single tasks. According to the Ahrefs market overview (July 2026), hourly rates in the DACH region range between 80 and 200 euros, with 100 to 150 euros being the most common band. Useful for targeted help: a keyword strategy, a consulting call, a second look at your relaunch concept.

Project price. A flat fee for clearly defined work, usually between 1,000 and 10,000 euros. Classics: technical audit, keyword research, on-page optimization of an existing page. Advantage: you know the cost upfront. Disadvantage: the project ends, and SEO is never finished.

Monthly retainer. The standard model for ongoing support. You pay a fixed amount, and in return someone works continuously on technology, content, and authority. It is the only model where rankings grow over months, because Google rewards continuity. That is why our own offer runs almost exclusively as SEO support on subscription.

What does SEO cost with a freelancer, agency, or in-house?

A freelancer costs 500 to 2,000 euros a month, an agency 1,000 to 10,000 euros, an in-house SEO 40,000 to 70,000 euros a year plus tools. The figures come from the Ahrefs market overview for the DACH region (July 2026) and match what we see in competitor proposals.

But the ranges only tell you what is common, not what you get for it. A freelancer at 900 euros might deliver 8 hours a month, often specialized in one area. A small agency at 2,000 euros brings writers, tech, and project management, but you are one of 30 clients. An in-house SEO knows your product better than any outsider, but cannot cover tech, content, and link building at expert level all at once.

Our view after dozens of B2B projects: for companies with 10 to 200 employees, a retainer with a specialized agency is the best ratio of cost, speed, and results. In-house pays off the moment SEO is your most important channel and you need someone coordinating internally. Ideally combined with external execution.

What pushes the price of SEO up?

The price hinges on five factors: competition, website size, technical condition, content needs, and backlinks. Agency size or a fancy office, by contrast, play no role in your result.

Competition. "Tax advisor Weiden" is a different league from "tax consulting Munich" or "ERP software". The more established pages fight for your keyword, the more content, authority, and time it takes. That is exactly what you see in the keyword difficulty at Ahrefs or Semrush.

Size and condition of the website. A technically clean ten-page site is optimized quickly. A shop with 4,000 URLs, duplicate content, and 6-second load times first needs a clean-up project before content even has an effect. What such a foundation looks like is in our article on technical SEO.

Content volume. Rankings come from content, and content costs time. Classic agencies charge 400 to 700 euros per article, because each text is 10 to 15 hours of manual work. We moved this part to our own content engine, where a human reviews instead of writes. That is why we can deliver volume that would otherwise be unaffordable in the market.

Backlinks. The most expensive building block. One good link from a relevant trade publication quickly costs 750 to 1,500 euros in effort. Whoever sells you "100 backlinks for 199 euros" is selling you a risk.

Speed. Whoever wants to be in 6 months where others arrive in 18 needs three times the cadence during that period. That costs accordingly.

What does SEO cost at INSYNC?

With us, ongoing SEO support costs 1,290 to 3,390 euros a month, an audit with roadmap from 1,500 euros. The prices are public on our pricing page, because we believe you should not need three calls to hear a number.

Care, 1,290 euros/month. Your fixed web team: 10 hours of design and development a month, maintenance, updates, monitoring, monthly report. For companies that want to maintain and develop their website without their own team.

Growth, 1,790 euros/month plus 3,900 euros setup. The actual SEO package: 5 keyword articles a month from our content engine, Google Business Profile, directories, visibility in AI answers, monthly ranking and AI monitoring, unlimited design and development tasks. With a results guarantee: no results after 6 months, we keep working for free.

Growth Max, 3,390 euros/month plus 4,900 euros setup. Everything in Growth at four times the cadence: 20 articles a month, 5 money pages, active backlink building, conversion optimization, and a monthly strategy call with the founders. For companies that want to be the first choice in their market.

Consulting instead of support. If you have your own team and only want to know where it is stuck: SEO consulting as an audit plus roadmap from 1,500 euros or as a workshop from 1,200 euros.

You pay the setup once, because that is where the work sits that carries everything afterwards: keyword strategy, technical base, content engine on your CMS, tracking. With an annual booking, it is waived.

Why cheap SEO ends up expensive

An SEO package for 99 euros a month cannot contain serious work, because a single hour of a specialist costs more. What you get for it is usually an automated report, a few meta tags, and in the worst case bought bulk links that earn you a manual action from Google.

The real price is lost time. Whoever parks with a budget provider for 12 months has not lost 1,200 euros but handed a year of head start to the competition. Rankings the competitor built in that time cannot be bought back with one month of extra budget.

How you spot dubious offers: guaranteed number-one rankings (nobody but Google can), no concrete scope with hours or deliverables, no reporting, pressure through time-limited deals. And the hard Ahrefs rule of thumb: below 300 to 400 euros a month, serious SEO work simply cannot be delivered.

What makes a fair offer instead: clear deliverables per month, a report you understand, honest expectation management (first movement after 3 to 4 months, not 3 weeks), and ideally a guarantee that hurts the provider if they do not deliver.

What does visibility in ChatGPT and AI search cost?

Visibility in AI answers (GEO, generative engine optimization) costs from 1,500 euros as an audit and between 1,500 and 10,000 euros as ongoing work, depending on scope. It is a new cost block that classic SEO offers do not yet include.

The reason: a good Google ranking says little about whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Mode recommend you. AI systems draw on different sources, weigh mentions in directories, trade media, and comparison sites more heavily, and cite content that is clearly structured and answers directly. Whoever optimizes only for rankings is often missing from the AI answer.

With us, AI visibility is already included in Growth and Growth Max: monitoring of mentions, optimizing content for AI readability, building the sources AI models cite from. Whoever wants to tackle the topic separately starts with the GEO audit from 1,500 euros via our GEO agency. What GEO exactly is and how it differs from SEO is explained in our article on SEO vs. GEO.

Is SEO worth it at these costs?

SEO is worth it when your target group actively searches and a customer is worth more to you than a few hundred euros. For B2B companies with order values in the four- to six-figure range, the math is usually quick: one order a year from organic search pays for the retainer.

The difference from Google Ads: with Ads, traffic ends with the budget. With SEO, the traffic you built stays, even if you reduce the budget later. In return, results come delayed. Expect 3 to 6 months until the first measurable movement and 12 months until stable visibility. Whoever cannot see that through should not put the money into SEO.

Our recommendation: have it checked beforehand whether your market supports the investment. An audit from 1,500 euros shows you where you stand, what your competitors do, and which budget is realistic. Then you decide with numbers instead of gut feeling.

Frequently asked questions

SEO in Germany typically costs 500 to 5,000 euros a month; according to Ahrefs, most small and mid-sized companies pay 800 to 2,500 euros. Freelancers start at 500 to 1,500 euros, agencies at 1,000 to 2,000 euros, and in competitive markets 3,000 to 5,000 euros are realistic. Our packages range from 1,290 to 3,390 euros a month.

An SEO agency in Germany usually costs 1,000 to 6,000 euros a month, small agencies 1,000 to 3,000 euros, mid-size and large 3,000 to 10,000 euros. The hourly rate is 100 to 180 euros. What matters is not the size of the agency but what is concretely delivered per month: articles, technical work, links, reporting.

The hourly rate for SEO in the DACH region is between 80 and 200 euros. Freelancers charge 80 to 120 euros, agencies 100 to 180 euros, experienced consultants 120 to 200 euros and up. Hourly billing pays off for clearly defined tasks like keyword research or a consulting call, not for ongoing support.

A technical SEO audit costs 1,000 to 5,000 euros in the market, depending on the size of the website. With us, an audit including roadmap costs from 1,500 euros and covers technology, on-page, content, authority, and AI readability. What matters is that prioritized actions come out at the end, not an 80-page error list.

SEO is expensive because it consists of many hours of expertise: analysis, strategy, texts, technology, link building, and monitoring, every month. A single good article classically costs 10 to 15 hours, a backlink from a trade publication 750 to 1,500 euros of effort. Compared to ads, however, SEO calculated over 24 months is usually much cheaper per lead.

You usually see the first measurable movement after 3 to 6 months, stable visibility after 12 months or longer. Costs start in month 1, the return comes delayed. That is why you should plan a budget for at least 6 to 12 months before you judge SEO.

Yes, for small websites and getting started. Tools like Google Search Console are free, a professional tool like Ahrefs costs from around 100 euros a month. But expect 5 to 15 hours for the keyword strategy and 3 to 8 hours per article. At your own hourly rate of 60 to 100 euros, the savings quickly shrink.
